New year prayer for the grieving and tired hearts, hope and healing.

A New Year Prayer for Strength When You Feel Down

A New Year Prayer for Strength When You Feel Down

Hello friends!  Here it is AGAIN.  A new year.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful, but wow! Already? Really?

A couple of days ago, I looked back on my journal from a year ago.  It was refreshing.  I figured out financing for my roof, and I replaced the A/C that I knew was on its last leg. Those were real problems, real stress, and now they are handled. Thank God.

Looking back matters because it reminds us: hard seasons can pass, and God really does provide.   But then, we can also look forward. A new year brings a fresh start and big goals. “This will be my year.”  And sometimes, that’s true. Sometimes you feel the spark.

But sometimes you don’t.

Sometimes you are hopeful, but a little scared to hope too much. Sometimes you are tired, not in a “take a nap” way, but in a deep, worn-down way. Sadly, this is familiar to me.  Sometimes the fact that the calendar changed doesn’t inspire us to change a thing.

If that’s you, it’s okay.  You are not failing. You’re human.  You’re going through the motions. Those motions will lead you to a better place if you allow them.

God is not asking you to sprint into January with perfect energy and a five-year plan color-coded in a binder. He is steady. He is present. He meets us right where we are.

At the beginning of this near year, I’m not trying to force a “new me” just because the date changed. I want real growth, the kind that happens one honest step at a time, with God close. I’m being intentional and I hope this encourages you to do the same.

That’s why I’m starting the year with a prayer.

(And after the prayer, I’m sharing a practical resource from Mel Robbins that I’m using too.)

A New Year Prayer for Strength

Precious Lord,
As this new year begins, some hearts feel hopeful,
some feel tired, some are carrying grief that didn’t stay behind when the calendar changed.

Meet each one right where they are.

For those stepping forward with excitement, help them hold joy with gratitude, not fear.
For those walking in uncertainty, give steady ground beneath their feet.
For those still hurting, remind them that healing is not rushed and love does not disappear.

Teach patience in the waiting. Courage in the unknown.
Gentleness with us when progress feels slow.

This year doesn’t need perfection. It needs presence.
Daily grace. Enough strength for today, not the whole journey.

Take the plans that are too heavy to carry alone.  Take the fears that whisper late at night.
Take the quiet prayers that don’t have words yet.

Walk with each step. Stay close in every season.
And let this year be shaped by faith, even when answers are unclear.

In Your Name, Amen.

A simple reminder for this year

If you only have enough strength for today, that is enough. Jesus said, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34) One day at a time is not a weak plan. It is a wise one.

If you’re starting out this year tired or grieving, these morning statements can help steady your mind.  They’re a great start to your day!

A practical resource I’m using this year

Ok, on to Mel Robbins. She shared a yearly reset called “6 questions to Ask Yourself”  and I like it because it’s straightforward and doable. She also offers a free companion workbook you can have emailed to you.

Here are the six questions she walks through, in simple terms:

  • What were the low points of your year?
  • What were the high points?
  • What did you learn this year?
  • What are you going to stop doing?
  • What are you going to continue doing?
  • What are you going to start doing?

How I’m Using it This Year

Before I work on it, I pray first, “Lord, give me wisdom”  Help me remember.  (James 1:5)
I’m giving myself 20-30 minutes to work on this.
I’m going to answer the questions honestly, not dramatically.
Finally, I’m going to ask the Lord to help order my steps (Proverbs 16:9)

Closing

January can make it feel like we must be brand new overnight. But God is not rushed, and He does not demand a perfect reset. He meets us right where we are. He is also the God outside of time.  He is longsuffering.  He knows everything about you! Walk with Him. He will lead you!

Grace for today, strength for this step, and God near in every season.
“And surely I am with you always.” (Matthew 28:20)

2026 doesn’t need perfection, It needs grace.

Until next time,

FAQ:

What is a good New Year prayer for someone who is grieving?
A good prayer is honest and simple. Ask God for daily strength, peace, and presence. Grief doesn’t follow the calendar, and you don’t have to pretend you’re fine.

What does the Bible say about worrying about the future?
Jesus reminds us not to borrow tomorrow’s trouble. Focus on today’s obedience and today’s grace. (Matthew 6:34)

How do I start the new year when I feel exhausted?
Start small. Pray, write one page, take one next step. Consistency beats intensity, especially when you’re healing.
